Window graphics are installed with a clear purpose in mind - to inform, to enhance the aesthetic of a space, to sell, to provide privacy. But too often that purpose is overshadowed by graphics that have faded, been scratched, are peeling, and in other ways show the effects of a shortened lifespan.
In most cases, that’s a condition that could have been avoided if some different choices had been made during the pre-production process. As you start your next window graphic design project, these are some of the things to consider as a way to increase the lifespan of window film.
When considering where printed window films will be installed, start by deciding if they will be going onto interior or exterior glass, but don’t let that be the end of the conversation. There are other environmental factors to take into consideration, such as:
Understanding the placement of all window graphics in a space is important because there are different substrates that are better used at different installation points. Matching the right film to the right location is one of the keys to maintaining the longevity of an installation.
Consider an office space with interior glass throughout. In addition to covering all of those with window film properties for privacy, you also need to cover a large window in an exterior-facing wall in a conference room. That’s the location that should be your starting point for materials discussions.
To expand the lifespan of that window film, you'll want to ensure that it has UV-protection. Many traditional films have this “baked in” but the trade-off can be found in graphics that are not as clear. LINTEC can incorporate a strong layer of UV-protection into the adhesive. This protects the clarity of the graphics longer. It’s a perfect match of right materials/right location for maximum graphic impact and longevity.
The material choices you make early in the design process can affect the lifespan of your window film. The installation and care of that film can alter that lifespan as well.
Everything needs a strong base, and that includes your printed window film installation. If it’s on dirty glass or has bumps and ridges, post-installation, it will not only not look its best, but it will be more susceptible to breaking down. That’s also true if installers use a corrosive material during the installation process.
Regardless of where your window graphics are installed, they are bound to get dirty. Keeping them clean keeps your message and design visible and vibrant, and it can also maintain the lifespan of the window film materials.
Sometimes a cleaning crew will make cleaning these graphics part of their regular schedule. That can be a great way to keep the graphics looking their best, provided they are using the right cleaning materials.
If they are using their regular cleaning solutions and those are slightly abrasive, they might be doing more harm than good. The window graphics are made to be durable, but even they have their limits. Instead, cleaning the window graphics material with a solution of neutral ph soapy water paired with a squeegee will help prolong its lifespan.
You want your window graphics to attract attention, but only for the right reasons. When those graphics start to show the wear and tear of time, the message they end up projecting is very different from their original purpose. That’s why it’s important to work with the professionals at LINTEC early in the process, so that you can be sure you’ve aligned the right materials with the space.
