When designers are creating signage, branding, or environmental graphics to use in a window display, the medium matters. Knowing whether the final display will utilize vinyl or polyester window film can help inform a designer and architect as to how best to use that space to tell a story.

But what is the difference between vinyl and polyester window films? Understanding the strengths of each material alongside the benefits they provide, can help the team choose a window film that will meet the needs for visual clarity, lasting durability, and application demands.

It’s Not ALL Vinyl

“Vinyl” has become a catch-all term for any material used to display window graphics, likely because it was the first commercially available film for printing. But that bit of industry shorthand doesn’t account for the variety of materials that can be used by architects and designers to add window graphics as part of a commercial building design.

There are perhaps three main categories of window film materials. Traditionally, vinyl graphic film and optically clear polyester film were used. Recently LINTEC launched a line of optically clear and clean room manufactured eco-friendly recycled PET window film. Each category has its own specific benefits and usage opportunities.

Vinyl vs. Polyester: A Breakdown of the Benefits

All materials are not created equal. Due to the unique demands of a location it is imperative to select the right base window film material for your project. This ensures that the designs will be crisp and clear and strengthens the durability of the entire installation.

Let’s look at what the traditional two window film material types can bring to a project.

Vinyl

Polyester

Optical Clarity

Mid-range optical clarity

Strong optical clarity with minimal distortion

Finish Consistency

Glossy, or a matte-overlaminate can be added

Resistant to discoloration.

Long-term Appearance

High-degree of durability

Resists fading and scratches

Color/Ink Adhesion

Available in multiple colors

Provides strong adhesion with UV curable inks

Print

Use with wide-format, large scale, and commercial inkjet printers

Excellent with UV inkjet and eco-solvent inks

Placement Notes

Receptive to placement on surfaces that have a texture. Typically has a self-adhesive film which makes it easy to apply and remove.

Best for flat, smooth surfaces as it does not stretch.

Use Cases

For creating decorative or atmospheric effects, it is a perfect material to add a decorative touch or increase the privacy of a space. Vinyl shines in outdoor applications.

Ideal for use in areas where security, safety, and light control are important. This can be an especially strong addition to your space due to its ability to provide UV projection.

Sustainability

One of the base materials in the manufacturing of vinyl is petroleum.

Recycled Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) films, which are part of the polyester family, are an eco-friendly material option that enables companies to project a message of sustainability while also meeting ESG* goals.

A note about rPET: Architects and designers have long sought sustainable materials that still meet an aesthetic standard. The recycled PET materials today are very different from what you might have seen just ten-years ago. They can now deliver a potent combo of clarity, printability, and durability that’s completely comparable to traditional window film material.

Vinyl vs Polyester: Which One is Right For You

Optically clear polyester film and vinyl graphic film can both enhance any space in your commercial building project. As for which one to choose for your next job, you should now know the benefits (and limitations) each provides.
